Aims

The main purpose of the course is to give knowledge about relevant analysis methods and toxicity testing. The course will also give knowledge about how to plan, carry out and evaluate tests concerning the toxicity of substances.

Content

Methods of analysis, how to prepare and keep anaysis of heavy metals, aromatic compounds, alifatic compounds, halogenetaded compounds in water, air, soil, plant, and tissue samples. Information about legitimate claims, limitations, advantages, and interpretation of different methods of analysis (such as chromatotography, electrophoreses, mass-, UV-, IR- and spectrophotometry, etc.). Methodology in animal experiments. Acute and chronic effects concerning mortality, reproduction toxicity, neuro toxicity; analysis of mutagenic and carcinogenic characters by using e.g. Ames' test and micronucleus test. Risk assessment. Visits in purpose of study are included.

Assessment

Examination is arranged during and at the end of the course. A passing grade for the entire course requires passing grades for the laboratory work and seminars. For students who have failed the exams during the course new exams will be arranged at the beginning of the autumn term, after Christmas and at the end of the spring term.
