General entry requirements

Learning outcomes

At the completion of the course the student should

be able to give an account of different perspectives on sustainable development;

have practical skills of several concrete methods of working toward sustainability, in his/her private life as well as his/her working life;

be able to give an account of different examples of sustainable development in practice, from a global to a local scale, and be able to analyse practical problems;

have practical skills in planning, carrying through and presenting a project that combines theoretical and practical skills with a knowledge of methodology.

Content

1. Introduction to the concept of sustainable development.

2. Review of different concrete methods for sustainable development in practice and the theories, assumptions and philosophies that underlie each method.

3. Examples of sustainable development on a global and local scale.

4. Projects completed in groups using one of the presented methods.

5. Presentation and evaluation of the projects and drawing connections back to the underlying theories.

Instruction

Lectures, study trips, field work, project work and seminars.

Assessment

The students are examined through their project work (4.5 credits) and active participation at the seminars (3 credits).
