General provisions

The syllabus was adopted by the Board of the Faculty of Languages on 2007-11-06 to take effect as of 2008-07-01.

Entry requirements

30 credits in a linguistic subject.

Learning outcomes

Upon completing the course students will

- Be able to read, translate and analyse elementary prose texts in Old Irish

- Be able to read, translate and analyse simple poetry in Old Irish.

Content

The course focuses on aspects of Old Irish grammar. Old Irish texts are translated and discussed with the focus on grammar and vocabulary.

Instruction

Group instruction. Instruction may be given using Web support or be Internet-based.

Assessment

Examination is done both orally and in writing as well as by continuous assessment. Grades used are either Fail, Pass, or Pass with Distinction.

Students who do not achieve a passing grade on the regular examination will have another opportunity to take the examination within a reasonable period of time after the regular examination.

Students who fail a certain examination twice have the right upon request, following consultation with the head of department, to have another examiner appointed.

Course level in relation to degree requirements

The course is offered as freestanding course and constitutes a part of Celtic Languages B.

Other regulations

For admission to the course Celtic languages C, 30 credits from Celtic Languages A1 and 30 credits from Celtic Languages B1 are required..

If the syllabus or course reading for a component has been changed, students have a right to be examined under the original syllabus and course reading on two occasions during the following semester. Normally this right then expires. Otherwise there are no limitations on the number of examination opportunities.
