Entry requirements

120 credits including 60 credits biology and 30 credits chemistry or earth science.

Learning outcomes

The overall aims of the course are that the student should understand environment assessment and the environmental impact assessment process, their role in planning and decision-making processes and the different actors' roles in the process. The student should, with the knowledge from the candidate course in toxicology as basis, also have a deeper knowledge and skills necessary to carry out toxicity tests, interpret results and present results of toxicity studies orally and in writing.

After the course, the student should be able to:

  • orally and in writing discuss about aim of environmental impact assessment (EIA) and the implication of the environment concept that is used in EIA
  • orally and in writing describe environmental assessment and environmental impact assessment process, their role in planning and decision-making processes and the role of different actors in the process
  • independently search information on laws and regulatory framework for EIA
  • discuss the efficiency and the power in EIA and how the skills of the EIA-providers influence these
  • plan and carry out toxicity studies according to accepted guidelines and GLP
  • independently interpret and evaluate own and other's experimental results
  • present experimental studies orally and in writing
  • Content

    The course contains two modules

    Environmental impact assessment (EIA), 7.5 credits: laws, regulatory framework around EIA and planning and decision-making processes in which EIAs are used, EIA-process and procedure, actors in EIA, and handling of different environmental aspects in EIA.

    Chemical trial, 7.5 credits: overview of accepted guidelines for toxicity studies and GLP (good laboratory practice). Furthermore, planning, implementation of own experimental studies, interpretation of experimental results orally and in writing, presentation of experimental studies and critical examination of scientific texts.

    Instruction

    The course consists of lectures . seminars and laboratory sessions.

    Assessment

    Module Environmental impact assessment 7.5 credits: Written examination

    Module Chemical testing 7.5 credits: Written and oral presentation of own experimental studies and opposition on other student's written and oral presentations.
