Entry requirements

120 credits with 60 credits physics, or equivalent, including Quantum mechanics. Nuclear physics. Elementary particle physics.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student should know the elements of the standard model, should understand the quark model of hadrons, and should starting from an effective Lagrangian be able to calculate matrix elements for decay and scattering at low energies.

Content

Kinematics. The S-matrix and its space-time symmetries. Noether currents. Unitary groups,in particular SU(2) and SU(3). The quark model: mass formulae, magnetic moments andDecays. Colour, gauge symmetry and quantum chromodynamics. Gluon-exchange potential.Weak interactions. Chiral symmetry; CVC and PCAC. Spontaneous symmetry breaking. Goldstone bosons. Anomalies and pion decay. Chiral dynamics.

Instruction

Lectures and classes.

Assessment

Hand-in problems during the course. The mark obtained depends on the quality of presented solutions. For the mark 5 the student should be able to solve the problems without help and in that process show good knowledge of the theory. If the solutions show holes in the understanding the mark given is 4. If the student needs substantial help to solve the problems the mark 3 might be obtained.
