Aims
The students will acquire knowledge of the organisation of the genome and its expression in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and to gain a theoretical and practical insight into molecular genetic methods.
Content
The organisation of the genome in prokaryotes and eukaryotes (animal, yeast and plant cells). Regulation of gene expressions. Biosynthesis of DNA, RNA and protein. Recombinations of genetic information such as recombinations and mutations. DNA reparation. The cell cycle. Mendelian genetics. Purification of DNA and RNA. The use and design of prokaryote and eukaryote vectors. Enzymes as a tool in gene technology. Cloning DNA. DNA sequencing. DNA libraries. PCR. Antisense and knock out techniques and transgenic animals. Ethics.
Instruction
Lectures, laboratory sessions and seminars.
Assessment
Individual written test. A pass also requires participation in seminars and a pass mark for laboratory work.
