Entry requirements

* 112.5 passed credits (75 credits)

* All oral, written and practical examinations in physiotherapy from earlier semesters must be passed

* If the examination consists of a report, this should be submitted before end of the actual semester and must be approved at the latest the following semester

Learning outcomes

The course should give advanced knowledge in scientific methodology and statistics. In the course is included a design of a minor essay to be examined

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

- account for what conditions are applicable when using parametric or not parametric statistical analytical methods

- account for research-ethical guidelines in medical research

SKILLS AND ABILITY

- calculate and understand the meaning of statistical analytical methods for independent and dependent groups

- calculate and understand the meaning of statistical analytical methods between groups based on frequencies

- calculate and understand the meaning of correlational statistics

- apply parts of the research process by formulating problems

- choose design and examination method

- express himself/herself in writing in form of a minor essay

EVALUATION ABILITY AND ATTITUDES

- be able to review critically essays of others

Content

Scientific methodology. Statistical Inference. Literature search. Critical review of scientific literature. Designing a minor essay.

Instruction

The teaching is given in the form of lectures and supervision in groups of two students.

Assessment

For satisfactorily passed course the requirements are:

- Passed minor essay

- Passed written assignment in statistics

Students who have not passed the examination have a right to attend 4 additional examinations (i.e. 5 examinations in total). If special circumstances apply, the programme committee may admit additional examinations. Every time the student participates in an examination counts. Submission of so called blank exam is counted as an examination. The student has the right to request a change of examiner after two failed examinations.
