General provisions

The content, length and level of the education are regulated by chapter 1, section 9 of the Higher Education Act 1 (1992:1434), by the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), and by the Ordinance on changes to the Higher Education Ordinance (2006:1053).

Entry requirements

At least 40 passed credit points in subjects equivalent to school year 1 in the programme and completed clinical courses from term 3 and 4. At admission to separate course, older biomedical laboratory science education or equivalent skills, is required.

Learning outcomes

After completed course, the student should be able to under supervision to:

- apply the taught theoretical and practical knowledge within biomedical laboratory methodology

- process and critically interpret analysis and research results

- notice and handle deviations and quality ensurance

- critically review, assess and use relevant information

- write reports set according to scientific models

After completed course, the student should be able to

- identify good and poor patient approach

- describe the logistic for diagnostic laboratories

Content

Patient approach, sampling, sample handling, referral procedure and examination flow of samples. Laboratory analyses and studies including analysis principles, the technical procedure, estimate of results and quality assurance for the chosen areas. Write a report on a chosen method.

Instruction

Practical and theoretical teaching is carried out under supervision of at least two fundamentalyl separated diagnostic laboratories and a primary health care centre.

Assessment

Examination is arranged in the form of individual written reports. The reports are assessed and are presented orally. Assessments from supervisors.

Student have the right to go through renewed clinical practice once. Exemption for additional occasions can be granted by the undergraduate education committee if special circumstances apply.

Other regulations

Student that not has passed the school located education/practice has the right to go through renewed school located education/practice once (chapter 6, section 21 of the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100)).

Practice interrupted prematurely

A student may fail and may interrupt the school located education prematurely if there is a noticeable risk that the student due to incompetence may injure an other individual or valuable property if he or she continues to participate in the school located education.

An individual plan should be decided for the student and given to him or her in writing. In this plan which should be determined by the programme committe, must be stated the knowledge and skill shortages at hand and the support the student may obtain from the department to rectify these and how and when the control will take place and the procedure for these. A student is entitled to maximum two control occasions, however no more than once each year.

The student may not participate in the school located education again, before the programme committee has controlled and accepted that the student has the knowledge and skills that are required.

Decision about the individual study programme may be delegated by the programme committee to the student welfare committee or equivalent body with student representation.
