Learning outcomes

The students will acquire

- knowledge of the fundamental principles for radiation protection

- knowledge of the organisation of the university and division of responsibility within the radiation protection

- knowledge of the organisation of the own workplace and division of responsibility within the radiation protection

- basic knowledge of the origin of radiation, properties and biological impact

- knowledge of risks when working with radiation and how these risks relate to other risks in the society

- basic knowledge of working method and measures to be taken when working with radiation sources

- basic knowledge and skills in using simple radiation protection instruments

Content

The organisation of radiation protection, systematic radiation protection work, the regulatory framework, guidelines, the origin of radiation, the basic interaction of radiation with matter, the biological impact of radiation, different types of injuries caused by radiation, risk comparisons, natural and anthropogenic sources of radiation, the LNT-hypothesis, dose estimation, measurement of general dose rates and personal radiation dose, justification, optimisation (ALARA-principle), dose limits, intake of radionuclides, external and internal radiation, dose conversion factors, radiation detectors, rules for practical work with radiation: Ten golden rules, measurement of radiation, contamination, decontamination of the workplace, applicable regulations. Handling of radioactive waste.

Instruction

The teaching is given as lectures and practical exercises.

Assessment

Examination is arranged through written presentation of radiation protection aspects regarding the own workplace and written examination of a selection of the different parts of the course content.

Attendance at lectures is required for the grade passed and that written examination in form of assignment has been carried out with approved result.
