Entry requirements

This is an elective course which is part of the programme in medicine, nursing or physiotherapy. For course admission, one must have completed as far as term 3 in the medical, term 5 in the nursing, or term 6 in the physiotherapy programs or the equivalent.

Aims

To provide knowledge of the gender aspects of women's health and diseases.

Content

From a multi-disciplinary perspective, the course deals with how cultural, psychological and biological factors affect women's health and different diseases. For example, the special situation of women is considered in relation to musculo-skeletal disorders, psychiatric diseases, eating disorders and stress, violence to women, coronary-vascular diseases, cancer, and skin diseases. Women's situation from a medical historical perspective is also covered as part of the course.

Instruction

Instruction is conducted through seminars and group instruction using the Supplemental Instruction method. Each student also conducts a more intensive literature study on a subject of their own choice under the individual guidance of a member of the course faculty. The results of this study are summarised in an essay valued at two academic points.

Assessment

To receive course credit, the student must be present for all parts of the course and achieve a satisfactory result on the course examination. The examination is in the form of seminars where each student defends their own essay and acts as opponent for the essay of another student.
