Learning outcomes

After completion of the course the student is expected to

- create an understanding of how the concepts of sacrament and church have developed and changed

- discuss the concepts of sacrament in relation to late modern and postmodern society and culture in Europe and USA

- theoretically analyse and estimate some models of pastoral theology in modern Catholic, Anglican and Lutheran churchmanship in USA

- independently identify formulate, investigate and discuss a problem in the area of study in relation to the Swedish situation and his/her own professional experiences.

Content

Lectures introduce the general themes of sacramental theology and church life, making comparisons between different aspects: European and American, confessional aspects, different forms of inculturation, premodern – modern and postmodern aspects.

The obligatory literature is commented in the seminars.

Instruction

1. basic introduction, 1200 pages, see the list of obligatory literature

2. lectures in Uppsala with introductory themes

3. two days with seminars on the obligatory literature

4. seminars in Philadelphia on some more specific themes ( together with a study group of US students),

5. writing of a short paper on the literature, with regard to his/her professional experience

6. a two days seminar in Uppsala with US students (if possible) /papers to be presented

Assessment

Examination by active participation in the seminars and by the papers mentioned above.

A completed course is given the marks Godkänd or Väl godkänd.

Other regulations

The main language of the course is English. Some lectures and seminars may be held in Swedish. The papers should be in English or Swedish (all with an abstract in English).

Transitional provisions

Members of a course regulated by a former version of this course plan have the possibility to be examined in accordance with that course plan within two years after the closure of the course. If there are particular reasons, such an examination can take place also later on. Normally no instruction in accordance with former versions of the course plan is given.
