The curriculum was adopted by the board of the Faculty of Languages on 2008-11-13 and takes effect as of 2009-07-01.

Entry requirements

Completed course English A, English B and English C or equivalent.

Learning outcomes

Upon completing the course students will be able to

- show a knowledge of how the function of the image in verbal narratives has changed over time

- demonstrate familiarity with ways in which literature and technologies of visuality like photography, graphic design, film or digital media intersect

- show an understanding of some of the theories and methodologies used in discussions of verbal-visual intersections

- gather and process critical material

- show proficiency in their use of critical material in a written literary analysis

- show a good ability to participate, orally and in writing, in a discussion of literary works in fluent English.

Content

In this course we examine how literature enters into relationships with various technologies of visuality, such as photography, graphic design, film, or digital media, seeking to trace the historically different constellations and functions of the image in a verbal narrative. While the emphasis is on the complex interplay between word and image, equally important to the course is the issue of what theories and methodologies can be leveraged towards an understanding of the verbal-visual interactions. Instruction

Group sessions. Instruction, class discussions, and examinations are in English. All teaching materials are in English.

Assessment

Students are examined continuously by means of oral presentations and written assignments. Grades are fail, pass, or pass with distinction.

Students who fail a regular examination will be offered a make-up examination within a reasonable period of time after the regular examination.

Students who fail an examination twice have the right to apply to the head of the department for permission to change examiners or examination forms.

Course level in relation to degree requirements

To obtain a "magisterexamen" in English an additional 22.5 academic credits in the subject on advanced level are required, including a 15-credit degree project. To obtain a Master's degree in English an additional 52.5 credits in the subject on advanced level are required, including a 30-credit degree project.

Other regulations

If the curriculum or the course literature for a course is changed, students have the right to be examined on the original curriculum and course literature on two occasions during the following term. After these two opportunities, the right normally expires. No other limitations apply regarding the number of examination opportunities.

Admission to the Master's level requires the completion of 80 (old) credits or 120 academic credits of the type introduced July 1, 2007.
