Learning outcomes
Uppsala Graduate School in Biomedical Research (UGSBR) has as its prime objective to give university students, heading for post-graduate studies, a deeper knowledge about research and development, increasing possibilities to make active choices among the multitude of biomedical research fields and to establish productive national and international contacts. Bioscience II is the second of the three courses constituting UGSBR.
Following UGSBR, students are expected to
- have knowledge about and ability to evaluate issues on research ethics
- have theoretical and practical knowledge in research communication and to conclusively present scientific data orally as well as in writing
- have theoretical and practical knowledge in scientific creativity, problem solving and critical evaluations
- have theoretical and practical experience in how to define and analyse scientific questions, critically analyse and evaluate obtained data and to identify and solve methodological problems.
- have theoretical and practical experience in bioscientific research projects
- have increased insight into current biomedical/bioscientific research
- have capacity to participate in and contribute to scientific discussions
Content
Individual lab rotation of approximately nine weeks at academic department or biotechnology/drug company. Continued course in bioinformatics. Course in research ethics.
Instruction
The theoretical parts are given as lectures and seminars. During the lab rotations, individual supervision and "hands-on" experience as well as participation in departmental seminars, journal clubs etc. Individual evaluation of written mini-review.
Assessment
Obtained results from lab rotation presented at a mini-symposium and as an abstract. Individual area of research summarised in referee-evaluated mini-review. Completed individual tasks at bioinformatics course. Ethics course concluded by a written exam. Both the practical and theoretical performances are evaluated and constitute the basis for the final course grade.
