Entry requirements
Basic university education of at least 180 ECTS credits in fields relating to biomedicine/bioscience; (bio)medicine, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, biology, biochemistry or biotechnology
Learning outcomes
Uppsala Graduate School in Biomedical Research (UGSBR) has as its prime objective to give university students, heading for a research education, a deeper knowledge about research and development, increasing possibilities to make active choices among the multitude of biomedical research fields and to establish productive national and international contacts. Bioscientific research is the last of the three courses constituting UGSBR.
Following UGSBR, students are expected to
- have broad knowledge of questions and methods in bioscientific research
- have advanced theoretical knowledge and practical experience from a number of specific research areas and research environments
- have established a network of scientists and research groups
- have advanced theoretical and practical knowledge and understanding in scientific creativity, problem solving and critical evaluations
- have increased theoretical and practical experience in how to define and analyse scientific questions, critically analyse and evaluate obtained data and to identify and solve methodological problems.
- have ability to communicate scientific data and participate in and contribute to scientific discussions
- be aware of the conditions for graduate studies
Content
Individual lab rotation of approximately nineteen weeks at academic department or biotechnology/drug company. In depth theme course on specific scientific field Parallel theoretical seminar series.
Instruction
The theoretical parts are given as lectures and seminars with discussions around scientific articles. During the lab rotations, individual supervision and "hands-on" experience and participation in departmental seminars, journal clubs etc.
Assessment
Obtained results from lab rotation presented at a mini-symposium and as a written report (degree report). Theory courses are concluded by discussion seminars. Both the practical and theoretical performances are evaluated by supervisors and teachers and constitute the basis for the final course grade.
