Entry requirements

The general rules laid down by the Curriculum Committee of the Faculty of Pharmacy apply (see programme curriculum). For entry to the separate course, students are required to fulfil the basic requirements for university entry and,

- have at least 30 points in chemistry from a scientific or technical degree course (including physical and organic chemistry) and basic courses in cell biology, physiology or equivalent, which will be assessed individually

- be registered on a pharmaceutical or closely related university course in another country and demonstrate satisfactory proficiency on individual testing.

Aims

Having completed the course, the student shall:

- have a basic knowledge of, and practical experience in, the formulation, production, biopharmaceutical function and quality control of finished pharmaceutical dosage forms.

- have a basic knowledge of quality assurance and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) and understand the quality concept upon which all handling of pharmaceutical formulations is based.

- have acquired the ability to seek, compile, present and critically examine information in relation to a given problem.

Content

Pharmaceutical dosage forms and routes of administration, including biological prerequisites and limitations. Physical systems relevant to pharmaceutical dosage forms, their properties and characterisation.

Pharmaceutical production methods and processes and sterilisation techniques. Production hygiene and quality assurance in the production of pharmaceuticals. Design and evaluation of pharmaceutical dosage forms with special reference to biopharmaceutical (including drug absorption), technological and stability aspects. Packaging, quality requirements and quality control of pharmaceuticals.

Instruction

The tuition comprises lectures, seminars, laboratory sessions and group exercises.

Compulsory parts of the course: All parts relating to laboratory sessions and group exercises.

Assessment

Written examinations are held at the end of the course. Students are required to pass the written examination (examination code) and compulsory parts of the course (examination code). Supplementory completion of compulsory parts of the course may be done in connection with the next course if there is a vacancy. Students may resit the examination four to five weeks after completion of the course(autumn term). Re-examination after the spring term takes place at the end of August. Students are allowed to sit the examination up to six times, i.e. the first examination and five re-examinations.
