Learning outcomes

In order to pass the course (grade 3) the student should be able to

  • outline the development of calculus before Newton and Leibniz:

  • outline Newton's theory of fluxions and Leibniz's differential calculus with applications;

  • describe some aspects of the later development of calculus;

  • give an independent analysis of original papers related to the issues mentioned above;

  • give an overview of the development of mathematics during the 18th and 19th centuries;

  • give a detailed account of some specific area of mathematics.

    Content

    Tangent and area computations in a historical perspective. Theory of fluxions. Differential calculus. Integral calculus. Important characters. History of of 18th an19th century Mathematics.

    Instruction

    Lectures and problem solving sessions.

    Assessment

    Written and, possibly, oral examination at the end of the course. Moreover, compulsory assignments may be given during the course.
