General entry requirements

Learning outcomes

After completed course, the student should be able to:

• describe Carl Linnaeus' work from his active period of time
• account for his importance for biology of today and his present-day importance also in other context
• illustrate present-day biological research and future development, based on a historical perspective on biology
• describe Linnaeus' pedagogical abilities and account for the connection between good educational methods and scientific progress
• illustrate in writing: Linnaeus' activities from both historical and biological perspectives
• summarise the value of historical locations, the historical landscape and historical flora in Linnaeus' Uppsala

Content

The following issues are included: Linn? as physician, scientist and pedagogue. The science of Linn? (medicine, ethno-botany, botany, zoology and mineralogy). The pupils and journeys of Linn?. The importance of Linn? today and future development of science.

Instruction

The teaching is given in the form of lectures and field trips.

Assessment

Requirements for passed grades from the course are: passed grades on the written examination (equivalent to 4 credits), an essay (equivalent to 4 credits) and compulsory parts (walks and visits equivalent to 2 credits).
