Entry requirements

Required previous knowledge is decided by the Committee for Undergraduate Medical Education.

Aims

This course is designed to provide the students with such knowledge and proficiency as to give them an understanding of the responsibilities of the medical care services for the health of the population. The students are given practical and theoretical tuition on the prevention, diagnostic procedures and methods of treatment of the most common diseases in the field of primary health so as to enable them to deal with simple cases encountered by general practitioners.

Content

The instructions include lectures, demonstrations, practical work and literature studies. The following areas are covered:

The ideology and organisation of primary health care. Home care. Community health care.

A survey of the most common diseases (according to international classification). This means a repetition of knowledge obtained by the students on the basis of hospital cases, and also new knowledge based on cases seen in primary health care.

Instruction

The course comprises two weeks of the 11th term. The teaching is carried out in small groups and partly takes place at primary health care centres in the Uppsala region.

Assessment

To complete the course satisfactorily the student is required to have participated according to the rules set by the medical faculty.

Examination consists of written and oral accounts of tasks, both performed individually and in groups.
