General provisions

Substitutes the earlier course 3FK080 Bioanalytical Chemistry. 1.5 credits (hp) correspond to 1 credit point (p) according to earlier ordinance.

Entry requirements

Within the pharmacy programme applies that 60 credits/40 credit points from term 1-3 have been achieved and that one has followed all earlier courses within the programme. For admission to single subject course, 45 credits (30 credit points) chemistry/biochemistry including analytical pharmaceutical chemistry 7.5 credits (5 credit points) are required, in the pharmacy programme, or the equivalent combination chemistry/biology with education connected to the subject, or the equivalent within medicine, biomedicine or veterinary medicine.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to - account for the need of bioanalytical methods at projects within pharmacology, biopharmaceutics, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, metabolism and toxicology - account for the effect of the biological sample on analysis methodology and - results - describe and apply liquid-liquid extraction and solid phase extraction for sample pretreatment - optimise the separation methods; liquid solid chromatography, ion exchange chromatography and gas chromatography - relate the principles and applications of spectroscopic, electrochemical and mass spectrometric detection at quantitative and qualitative analysis in the area of bioanalysis - describe the basic principles and applications of immunological methods for determination of drugs and related subjects - review the basic principles of method construction and validation of bioanalytical methodology - modify analytical methods for quantitative and qualitative determinations of drug in biological material guided by given scientific articles

Content

The course intends to provide knowledge and understanding about analytical chemical techniques and methods at applications within bioanalytical chemistry. The course includes principles for sample pretreatment, immunological methods and thorough studies of separation methods, mass spectrometry method construction and method validation. The knowledge should be possible to apply to formulate and assess analytical methods for drugs, related compounds and their metabolites in biological materials.

Instruction

The teaching is given as lectures, seminars, demonstrations and laboratory sessions. Special focus is directed to stimulate the students independently to solve problems. Compulsory parts of the course: Course introduction. All items in connection with laboratory sessions including group meetings, instruction surveys and oral reports.

Assessment

Written examination and special laboratory session (oral and written reports). For passed in the course passed laboratory course (examination code) and passed examination (examination code) are required. Possibility to supplement failed laboratory course can be given at the earliest at the following course and only in case of a vacancy. Each student has the right to in all 6 examinations i.e. one examination and five re-examinations.
