Entry requirements

The course is taught for students within Uppsala university, Politices magisterprogram, and for exchange students. Political Science, second year level or equivalent education.

Learning outcomes

The goals of the course is to deepen the students knowledge of the central areas of interest of political science, and to increase his or her ability to adequately handle political science material.

After completion of the course, the student is expected to:

- have a good knowledge and understanding of several political science theories of comparative European politics, and an improved ability to apply these empirically

- have a fair knowledge of several European national polities and their history

- have a good ability to exploit this knowledge for comparative political science analysis, including the formulation of problems, the collection and critical evaluation of information

- have good analytical skills, including writing and oral presentation skills

Content

The course Comparative European Politics is concerned with the comparative study of nation level polities in Europe. The course introduces students to current and classic themes of comparative politics. It is focused on the history and contemporary developments of Western Europe, as well as historic non-democratic regimes, and with problems of post-communism in new European Union member states.

This course introduces students to the comparative study of national European polities. It gives a broad overview of some current and classic themes of comparative European studies. The course is focused primarily on the contemporary developments of the established as well as new European democracies. It deals also with the political legacies of historical non-democratic regimes in Europe.

Instruction

The course consists of lectures and seminars. The language of instruction is English.

Assessment

The course examination consists of:

i) written assignments and active participation in the seminars of the course

ii) a written exam

Grading according to the Swedish scale High Pass-Fail (VG-U). For exchange students also the ECTS scale A-F.
