Entry requirements
120 credits with mathematical analysis, vector analysis, classical mechanics, thermodynamics or similar.
Learning outcomes
After the passing the course the student should have a basic knowledge about the physics, hydrodynamics and chemistry of combustion, the efficiency of burning processes and about pollutant emissions. The student should be able to apply this knowledge to solve problems and explain combustion phenomena.
Content
Introduction: Energy production and energy sources. Combustion regimes; pollutants, efficient and clean combustion. Introduction to thermodynamics. Thermodynamics of chemical reactions. Chemical kinetics of combustion processes. Reactions mechanisms. Adiabatic flame temperature. Adiabatic explosion; Semenov's theory of explosion. Non-branching and chain branching chemical reactions. The hydrogen-oxygen explosion. Velocity and temperature of laminar flames. Introduction to fluid mechanics. Combustion regimes: premixed and diffusion combustion. Flame stability. Flame, explosion and detonation.

Oral examination at a final seminar.
