General provisions

The Department of History is responsible for the course. The course was approved by the board of the Department of History 2007-10-24.

Entry requirements

Students admitted to Master programmes at the Department of History (Uppsala university), students admitted to the one and the two year Masters programs of the Faculty of Art and eligible exchange students.

Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to provide advanced insights into the historical development of a particular part of the world. This includes knowledge of the sources available to historians working with this area, as well as familiarity with the methods, theories, and broad questions that have been used by historians and other scholars. The course will provide the background necessary to pursue research on this particular geographic area.

The student will:

- acquire in-depth knowledge of the history of the chosen area.

- obtain empirical and theoretical insights into the historical development of the chosen area.

- acquire an awareness of different perspectives in historical research.

- develop an awareness of the diversity and complexity of historical explanation.

Competences

The student will:

- develop a broad, comparative understanding of the sources, theories and methods used in the historical sciences.

- acquire an awareness of and respect for points of view deriving from other national or cultural backgrounds.

- acquire the capacity to survey a large body of literature, and to identify important continuities and discontinuities.

- attain extensive skills in problem identification and solving, communication, and knowledge sharing.

- acquire a concern for quality.

Instruction

The course consists of tutorials based on the study of relevant scholarly literature and the writing of papers.

Assessment

Examination consists of active participation in the tutorials and in paper writing. Grades will be given in accordance with the Swedish grading system. The following grades will be used: A and B (Pass with distinction), C, D and E (Pass), and Fx and F (Failed).

Other regulations

Graduates with a Master's degree in history will be employable in a wide variety of occupations. A Master in history provides a good basis for responsible positions in secondary and higher education (PhD programme), civil service on the local, regional and national levels, personnel management, journalism, international organisations, tourism as well as enhancing cultural heritage in its various manifestations including archives, museums and libraries.
