General entry requirements

Learning outcomes

The course gives a review of Turkic literature with special emphasis on Turkish literature. Texts in translation or in the original language are studied.

At the end of the course the student will be expected to:

• be able to account for the history of literature in Turkic languages from about 700 A.D.,
• know the essential traits of Modern Turkish literature,
• give an account of the different literary genres of the classical Turkic prose and know about significant works in the different genres,
• describe the development of modern Turkish prose,
• account for the life and work of the most outstanding Turkish authors.

Content

The course is a first introduction into the literature of Turkic speaking peoples. The main traits of Turkic literary history are outlined. Texts from different periods are studied, such as, the Orkhon inscriptions, the Buddhist texts of the Old Uyghurs, the first Islamic literatures of the Karakhanids. Examples of Chaghatay literary genres are given. Examples of Old Anatolian mystical Islamic poems are discussed. Special interest is paid to the development of modern Turkish literature.

Instruction

The basic elements are lectures, seminars and colloquia. The student’s work on his/her own plays an important role.

Assessment

The student will be examined through a combination of different moments either during the course or at an occasion agreed upon with the teacher.

Course level in relation to degree requirements

The course is given in the second term of studies in Turkic languages.
