Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Describe common methods of measurement for plan and altimetry.
  • Account for the setting and usage of reference systems.
  • Calculate coordinates for a random station position.
  • Carry out polar calculations and determine setting out data.
  • Measure and calculate a traverse
  • Account for the usage of various types of networks.
  • Measure in and put out traverse points by means of total station.
  • Carry out a line levelling, fill in and normalise a balance record.
  • Describe the set up and functions of the levelling instrument
  • Account for the cause of measurement errors and how to handle arisen errors.
  • Account for the basic principles of the error theory, rough systematic and random errors, precision and accuracy, the normal distribution of the errors and standard error of mean etc...
  • Describe the set up and usage of the GPS-system within the building construction and infrastructure sectors.
  • Account for statistical acceptance inspection according to the method described by the Road Authority.
  • Carry out and calculate trigonometric height evaluations.
  • Account at a general level for the set up and function of a total station.

Content

Basic geodesy, reference systems for plan measurements and altimetry, geodesic methods of measurement, measurement and equalisation of traverses. Instrumentation, practical management of total station and levelling instruments. Basic error theory, error smoothing. Setting-out on construction site, primary and secondary network. Statistical acceptance inspection according to the method described by the Road Authority. Measurement with GPS. Indoor measurements for buildings. Laser scanning.

Instruction

Lectures and lesson exercises interleaved with practical field exercises.

Assessment

Written examination at the end of the course (2 credits), passed seminar presentation, passed field exercises, compulsory attendance on field exercises (3 credits).
