Entry requirements
120 credits with 60 credits Chemistry including 6 credits in Analytical Chemistry, or equivalent.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student should be able to
- describe physical background and the applicability of different spectroscopic techniques
-describe the construction and function of instrumental components for different spectroscopic techniques
- describe how different techniques are utilised in flow systems (FIA)
- perform theoretical calculations related to the techniques discussed
-predict how changes in instrumental parameters will influence on the measurements with the different techniques
- evaluate the applicability of the different techniques to solve analytical problems
- present in Swedish/English orally and in written reports the results from experimental work
- describe analytical technique in a popular scientific way
Content
Overview of interaction between radiation and matter. Atomic Absorption and Emission spectroscopy (AAS, AES). Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF). X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Electron Spectroscopy.(ESCA, Auger). Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM, EDS). Radiochemical methods, Ion Chromatography (IC) and Flow Injection Analysis (FIA).
Instruction
Lectures, seminars, laboratory work, and study visit. Compulsory moments: Course introduction, laboratory work seminars and study visit.
Assessment
Examination is arranged during and/or at the end of the course. An article written in a popular scientific way should be written during the course. The article and the laboratory work must also be passed. The laboratory work and writing the article are evaluated to 6 credits. Students who have failed a test will be given new opportunities.
