General provisions

The course is a freestanding course and an elective course within the Master's programme in public health.

Entry requirements

First-cycle programmes of at least 180 credits and the course Impairment and Disability, Introductory Course.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to

- explain and discuss impairment and disability in different theoretical perspectives

- understand and discuss public and social preconditions for living conditions, own influence and participation of people with disabilities.

- discuss ethical issues that can occur in the interplay between persons with disability and their significant others

- independently compile and discuss a written minor essay about own chosen subject within the frame of the course

- review a written minor essay within the frame of the course

Content

The course includes literature and lecture-based elements that focus impairment and disability regarding theoretical perspectives, public and social preconditions for living conditions, own influence and participation and the importance of the perspective of the individual and the role of the significant others. The course also includes instruction concerning contents and structure of a minor essay.

Instruction

The instruction is given through lectures and seminars. The course participants also carry out a written assignment (minor essay) based on reading list, lectures and reference literature of own choice

Assessment

Examination takes place through active participation in seminars and an individually written minor essay that is presented at a seminar and oral review of other student's written minor essay. All lectures and seminars are compulsory. Absence in addition to 10 % of lectures is compensated by a written complementary assignment.
