Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student will:

- Be able to take a broader, international view of appraisal in order to develop better personal methodological approaches to appraisal;

- Be able to link theoretical approaches to appraisal practice;

- Have developed comparative analysis skills;

- Be able to establish links between archival and records management perspectives on appraisal, particularly focusing on electronic records;

- Have explored the corporate and social role of records and archives;

- Have explored the concept of social memory in the framework of a democratic Europe;

- Be aware of special appraisal issues when working in multi-jurisdictional projects;

- Understand the role of appraisal as an active shaper of memory and the record;

- Have summarised and evaluated experiences from international cooperation.

Content

This summer course is a part of the Erasmus Intensive Programme Archives and Records Challenges in the Digital Information Society (ARCHIDIS). The program confronts the challenges of creating, capturing, managing and preserving corporate and social memory in our digital information society. Through a case-study approach, participants apply a comparative lens to issues which are central to preventing digital amnesia: the loss of corporate and social memory through failure to appropriately manage archival records in the digital environment.

Instruction

The teaching takes place in Marburg and consists of lectures, seminars and educational study visits. Some preparatory work in advance is also requested, as well as a concluding report.

Assessment

Examination is effected by means of written and oral accounts of assignments and exercises performed individually and in group.
