Entry requirements
First-cycle programmes of at least 180 credits within a relevant field. After individual review also open for applicant with older professional qualification, however at least 135 credits, and with experience in the field.
Learning outcomes
The course intends to deepen the knowledge of educational and organisational theories and models appropriate for activities within geriatric care and to deepen the knowledge of evidence-based preventive and rehabilitating methods to retain/increase functional and activity capacity in the elderly.
On completion of the course, the student is expected to be able to:
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
1. Define and explain central concepts in educational and organisational models that can be applied in health prevention and rehabilitation of the elderly.
2. Describe and explain methods/strategies to support health promoting behaviours in elderly individuals and groups
3. Describe and explain evidence-based rehabilitating methods to increase functional and activity capacity of the elderly
4. Describe theoretically tests and evaluation methods suited for older
SKILLS AND ABILITY
5. Adapt theories and models to support health promotion behaviours and suggest applications in so called cases
6. Evaluate preventive and rehabilitating measures for older on functional, activity and participation level
7. Use strategies for treatment of patients with cognitive impairment to support activity and participation
JUDGEMENT AND INDEPENDENCE
8. Critically evaluate a scientific intervention study within the geriatric field based on defined criteria
9. Compare and evaluate tests and evaluation instruments based on a scientific perspective 10. Compare and evaluate methods to promote physical activity
Content
Educational and organisational models and its application within geriatric care. Theoretical and practical knowledge of evaluation instruments. Strategies for promoting health behaviour, Countering of individuals with dementia. Training methods to retain/increase functional and activity capacity
Scientific review and evaluation of geriatric intervention research
Instruction
The teaching is given as lectures, seminars, group assignments and via learning management system (requires Internet connection). The student carries out study assignments alone or in collaboration with a study group between each course gathering.
Assessment
Passing the course requires:
Passed individual study assignments examine aim 1, 4-9
Passed group assignments examine aim 2-3
Students who fail the examination have the right to retake the examination 4 times (=in total 5 examinations). After five failed examinations, the student may lose his/her right to continue the studies. The chairmen of the programme committee may however after specific review consider additional examination The application for specific review should be sent to the director of studies for forwarding to the chairmen of the programme committee. Every time the student participates in an examination counts. i.e. the student is in the location and takes part of the examination assignment without completing the examination. The student has right to request a change of examiner after two failed examinations
