Entry requirements

The course is primarily intended for exchange students and visiting students participating in bilateral university exchange programmes or in university or national scholarship schemes for students from other countries. Only in exceptional cases can students other than the categories mentioned above be admitted to the course after special consultation with the Admissions Office.

Aims

The introductory lecture and the seminars will provide a brief outline of Swedish literature from the so-called ""modern breakthrough"" in the 1880s to the new vogue of 'storytelling' in the 1980s. The selected texts will be studied with an emphasis on their social and historical context, and with an eye to their relationship to the European literary tradition. Due attention will be given to the generation of 'proletarian writers' which emerged in the late twenties and had a significant impact on Swedish culture. Debates and polemics will be drawn on for an insight into the internal dynamics of the literary field. In general and in sum, the course seeks to give an understanding of how Swedish writers have tried to give shape to the experience of modernity.

Assessment

All sub-courses will be examined through written and/or oral exams. Grades given are Pass with distinction (VG), Pass (G), and Fail (U)
