Learning outcomes

The education intends to give increased skills in oral and written treatment of Swedish. It also gives advanced knowledge of the structure of Swedish and knowledge of specialisations' function in different linguistic situations. In addition the course gives further experience to read longer literary and academic texts in Swedish. Module 1 Oral language proficiency 7.5 credits Upon completing the component, students will • have acquired a for this level good skill to perceive, understand and be able to reproduce spoken Swedish in different situations • have an adequate active and passive vocabulary • be able to speak Swedish without disturbing accent and with a grammatically satisfactory language • be able to apply some presentation technique • be able to prepare, structure and present various types of oral presentations • be able to use adequate facilities at presentations. Module 2 The structure of the Swedish language 7.5 credits Upon completing the component, students will • be able to identify and apply basic grammatical terminology • able to apply the rules of grammar in free and controlled production • be able to account for and reflect on the fundamental features of the syntactic and morphological structure of Swedish • be able to account for basic semantic terminology • have an adequate active and passive vocabulary. Module 3. Written language proficiency 7.5 credits Upon completing the component, students will • be able to use appropriate hand books, dictionaries, grammars and other facilities • know and apply the most common Swedish writing rules • be able to write with a grammatically satisfactory language • be able to design texts of different types • be able to plan their writing, i.e. collect materials, sort, structure and process it according to the writing process • be able to adapt the stilistic level to the context • have an adequate active and passive vocabulary. Component 4. Stilistic variations in speech and writing 7.5 credits Upon completing the course, students will • be able to identify and describe the variation of Swedish in different contexts by using adequate terminology • be able to analyse texts representing different genres • be able to present and discuss a certain set read Swedish fiction and nonfiction • have an adequate active and passive vocabulary.

Content

The course consists of four compulsory modules: Oral language proficiency, The structure of the Swedish language, Written language proficiency and Stilistic variations in speech and writing.

Module 1 Oral language proficiency, 7.5 credits

Module 2 The structure of the Swedish language, 7.5 credits

Module 3. Written language proficiency, 7.5 credits

Component 4. Stilistic variations in speech and writing, 7.5 credits

Instruction

The instruction is given in the form of lectures and group instruction (partly in learning lab). Compulsory parts occur.

Assessment

A Pass grade requires passed compulsory written assignments and passed results of written examination at the end of each module of the course and passed results of oral test in the module Oral language proficiency. Students who do not achieve a passing grade on the regular examination will have another opportunity to take the examination within a reasonable period of time after the regular examination. A student who has failed a test two times has by applying to the head of department possibility at one's own request to change examiner or examination format. Grading scale: Passed with distinction, Passed, Failed. To pass the course with distinction, the grade Pass with distinction on at least three modules is required.

Other regulations

The course may not be included in a degree if equivalent parts have been studied within another course included in the degree.
