Learning outcomes
This course is designed to introduce students to advanced analysis of contemporary issues in organisation studies. The aim is to provide a comprehensive basis for analysing and understanding current research areas within organisation theory and to prepare students for performing accurate analyses of interesting and relevant organisational issues in line with the standard requirements of advanced academic writing. The course will provide an overview of methodological strategies and practices, and students will be trained to evaluate the appropriateness of a variety of methodological approaches and analytical strategies to answer different research questions. After participating in the course the student will be able to present, prepare and plan an independent academic project. This means that the student will be able to formulate and motivate a research question that is theoretically as well as empirically relevant and to plan and present a research design that could be used to investigate this specific research area/question.
Content
The course is based on a series of seminars where students discuss and analyse current research issues within different fields of organisation theory. Topics may include new forms of organisational design, reputation management, decision making in organisations, new forms of regulation and governance, the role of professionals in institutional change, leadership, etc. Students will be asked to – orally and in writing – present and motivate relevant and interesting research questions within different research areas, and to plan and design a research project appropriate for the chosen research question.
Instruction
The course is taught through seminars, lectures and writing exercises. The language of instruction is English.
Assessment
Examination includes seminar work, writing exercises and a course essay. The final grade of the course is determined after taking into consideration the different parts of the examination. Grading criteria are presented in the study guide provided at the start of the course.
