Learning outcomes

A student who successfully completed the course will be able to:

• make informed choices between different contemporary historiographical methods, including various theoretical approaches, and use the different methods and theories in her/his own research.

• understand and make use of theories and methods from other social sciences used in historical and social scientific research.

• define and develop research topics suitable to contribute to historical knowledge and debate.

• analyse and critique arguments for their content as well as their form or method.

• write in English using correctly the various types of writing used in history and the social sciences.

• comment and annotate texts and documents correctly according to the canons of the discipline.

Content

Advanced research requires a comprehensive understanding of different perspectives and methods. For a trans-disciplinary approach it is absolutely necessary to be well versed in the diverse modi of different scholarly disciplines. This course not only deals with different methodological strategies of history and the social sciences, but in bringing them together also generates a surplus value in a synthesis.

The purpose of the course is to provide students with advanced insights into the theory and practice of scholarly thinking and argumentation with a particular focus on the scholar’s craft. The course deals with different theoretical and methodological approaches relevant to the study of modern politics, culture, and society, with a special focus on historical and contemporary social movements. Eventually students are expected to be able to implement various forms of historical and social scientific research and to execute multiple manners of presentations of scientific results according to the kind of research topic

Instruction

Active participation in seminars and/or tutorials.

Assessment

Assessment includes fulfiling assignments, writing and defending papers. Grades will be given in accordance with the Swedish grading system. The following grades will be used: Pass with distinction (VG), Pass (G) and Fail (U).
