Entry requirements

For admission to a new term, passed compulsory parts are required from previous terms and all examinations, except one from the nearest previous term, must be passed. After interruption of studies, it is required that all courses from the previous terms are passed. The education follows a course of studies which implies that the courses should be read in an established order.

Learning outcomes

Provide the medical student with basic subject aimed knowledge and practical education in diagnostics and treatment of dermatological, endocrinological, rheumatologic and orthopaedic diseases that can provide a basis for the continued education up to medical degree. The teaching should give profound clinical skills in examination technique concerning the endocrine organs, the skin and the musculoskeletal system. Further, for the duration of the term, a continued development of clinical skills concerning medical history and status, in addition to structured training to interact in and lead teamwork. The teaching also intends to integrate preclinical and clinical knowledge within the key areas that are treated during this term. After the course, the student should be able to - apply basis scientific knowledge that facilitates evaluation and explanation of pathophysiology clinical manifestations and therapeutic intervention at diseases within the endocrine organs, the skin and the joint and musculoskeletal system, including fracture knowledge, inflammatory joint and system diseases and immunocomplex diseases. - independently be able to apply knowledge within diagnostic radiology and clinical pharmacology of relevance for diagnostics, handling and treatment of different diseases. - explain and apply concepts within pathology, tumour biology and tumour genetics with relevance for origin, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of malignant diseases. - carry out, and document in medical record and certificate, a study of the musculoskeletal system including function status, joint status and neurological drop-out symptoms, and identify, evaluate, and explain the findings at inflammatory and not inflammatory joint or muscle disease. - apply general fracture knowledge; principles of primary treatment, investigation time and continued treatment of fractures and joint injuries, and state and summarise the most important orthopaedic diseases: aetiology, pathology, diagnostics, differential diagnosis, investigation, prognosis and treatment possibilities - explain the musculoskeletal systems reaction to trauma, prevent complications of injuries and be familiar with the principles of treatment of multiple injured patient. - summarise a skin medical history and skin condition and correctly use biopsy at diagnostics of skin diseases - independently process the most common skin diseases, distinguish unusual but serious disease that requires dermatological assessment and inform patients about preventive measures for environmentally triggered skin disease - identify inflammatory joint -, muscle and system diseases on the basis of diagnostic criteria and clinical and laboratory based findings, and suggest and explain treatment principles of these. - understand the pathogenesis of immunocomplex diseases and identify symptoms and clinical signs connected to specific immunocomplex diseases. Plan and justify supplementary investigations and analyse the prerequisites for treatment. - on the basis of diagnostic criteria independently be able to diagnose and treat the endocrine national diseases including diabetes, thyreoidea diseases, hyperparathyreoidism and osteoporosis. - state and summarise pathogenesis, symptoms and treatment at pituitary gland diseases and endocrine diseases in the adrenal glands including endocrine hypertension and account for common endocrine tumours and suggest treatment of these - independently carry out complete medical history and status on a patient, evaluate statements from the patient, and status finding, and by means of these suggest continued investigation, and give proposals for diagnosis and treatment.

Content

The course is initiated with a 4 weeks integration period where clinical and preclinical subjects are joined within certain medical key areas. Thereafter follows an intermediate period with clinical duty where profound training in clinical examination methodology, particularly regarding skin and joint status are included. The duty is located to clinics within medicine, surgery, orthopaedics and dermatology. Practical training in surgical operation, plastering technique, skin-punch biopsy and injection technique are included. Most students have during the course, up to 8 weeks, clinical practice outside the Academic hospital (hospitals in Västmanland, Gästrikland, Hälsingland, Dalarna, Värmland, Uppland and Södermanland). The course is completed with an integration week. During the integration periods, teaching in the following medical subject areas is given: Clinical Pharmacology Radiology Nutrition Physiological and pathophysiological conditions in the relevant organ systems treated during the term Tumour Biology and oncology Teaching is given within the following medical main areas: Dermatology Endocrinology Endocrine surgery Ortopaedics Rheumatology

Instruction

The teaching goes on for 20 weeks including study periods and comprise lectures, demonstrations, laboratory sessions, group tuition, case discussions and problem-based seminars. The emphasis in the teaching is located to ward - and surgery duty with patient-close work, demonstrations, auscultation and rounds and duty on operating rooms. 24-hour duty is included.

Assessment

For regulatory framework about absence from compulsory parts and rules for participation in examination, see programme curriculum in the students guide. The course is completed with a written examination. Practical patient examinations with medical history, status, followed by tentative diagnosis, presentation of investigation and treatment suggestions are also included. At the practical examination, the medical student is assessed concerning examination capability, conduct, attitudes and ability to communicate with the patient. Number of examination Students who have not passed the examination have a right to attend 4 additional examinations (i.e. 5 examinations in total). If special circumstances apply, the programme committee may admit additional examinations. Every time the student participates in an examination counts, i.e. also submission of a so called blank exam. Submission of so called blank exam is counted as an examination. Prematurely interrupted practice: A student may fail and be forced to interrupt the school located education prematurely if there is a noticeable risk that the student due to incompetence may injure another individual or valuable property if he or she continues to participate in the school located education. An individual plan should be decided for the student and given to him or her in writing. In this plan, which should be determined by the programme committee, must be stated the knowledge and skill shortages at hand and the support the student may obtain from the department to rectify these and how and when the control will take place and the procedure for these. A student is entitled to a maximum of two control occasions, however no more than once during one year. The student may not participate in the school located education again, before the programme committee has controlled and accepted that the student has the knowledge and skills that are required. Decisions on the individual study programme may ,by the programme committee, be delegated to a student welfare committee or the equivalent with student representation. Students that have not passed the clinical education have the right to go through a renewed clinical education once. If special circumstances apply, the programme committee may admit an additional occasion to go through clinical education.
