Entry requirements

Qualified to the course is the one who has been admitted to any of the Master courses or Master programs of the History and Philosophy Faculty or has bachelor’s degree.

Learning outcomes

After passing this course students will be able to:

- Give an account of the general cultural-historical development of the Baltic Sea Area from the colonisation at the end of the last Ice Age to the Bronze Age.

- Discuss and problematise local and nationalistic archaeological interpretations from a wider perspective on the general cultural development in the Baltic Sea Area.

- Reflect on and question how concepts such as “culture”, “identity” and “ethnicity” are used in prehistoric archaeology.

- Discuss how cultural and natural processes and events have affected the cultural-historical development of the Baltic Sea Area.

Content

Different local perspectives on the prehistoric development in the Baltic Sea Area are compared in order to identify cultural similarities and differences based on the archaeological source material and not on historical or present-day political or national borders.

Instruction

The examination consists of a written exam and participation in exercises and seminars. A Pass (G) requires the participation in exercises and seminars. For Pass with distinction (VG) requires VG on a written exam assignment, and participation in all seminars and excursions. Course participant who conducts the examination after the deadline may not receive the grade Pass with distinction unless special circumstances exist.
