Entry requirements
50 points in Physics, Mathematics, Technology, including
Global Geophysics MN1 5 points, or 45 points in Earth
Science, including Global Geophysics MN1 5 points, and
20 points in Mathematics and Physics MN1 10 points.
Aims
The course provides a deeper knowledge of
geophysical methods, with particular emphasis on
the use of fundamental physical and mathematical
relationships to understand and describe physical
structures and processes within the Earth, and the
application of these techniques to solve practical
problems.
Content
Potential field theory. The Earth's gravity field
and isostasy. Heat flow and convection. Electromagnetic
theory and the Earth's magnetic field. Seismic wave
propagation and mechanical properties of the Earth.
Geodynamics, geoid and land uplift.
Instruction
Lectures, lessons, problem solving and laboratory exercises.
Assessment
Written exams during, and at the end of the course.
Students who have failed a test have the right to
take a new examination, that will be arranged by
agreement with the director of studies in geophysics
or with the responsible teacher.
