Learning outcomes
A student who successfully completed the course will be able to
- describe social, economic, political and cultural conditions on medieval Gotland
- compare this with conditions with other parts of Europe
- discuss and analyse source material, methods and perspectives on the Middle Ages in different academic disciplines.
Content
The course provides an introduction to ordinary life in the Middle Ages, such as it can be studied in written and material sources. Gotland is used as an example for exploring different aspects of medieval life in the light of several academic disciplines: archaeology, history, art history and theology. Conditions in medieval Europe are also discussed in order to put the Gotlandic society in a wider context. The course explores three themes: towns and trade, peasant societies and religious life. Gotland’s rich medieval heritage will be used in excursions.
Instruction
Teaching is provided through lectures, seminars and excursions. The course is given in English.
Assessment
Assessment will be based upon written assignments and active participation in seminars and excursions. Seminars and excursions are mandatory. Students who have missed a small number of mandatory assignments, seminars or excursions or who have failed in some of the assignments may complete them with written assignments four weeks after the end of the course at the latest.
