General provisions

The course is given for nursing students within international exchange programmes and consists of clinical placement.

The course aims to enable the students to acquire advanced knowledge in specific and general nursing and medical knowledge in psychiatric care. In addition the students will acquire advanced knowledge and skills concerning professional and scientific approach and carry out nursing interventions in collaborations with nurses and other health-care personnel.

Entry requirements

Nursing programme: Medical science 52.5 credits or equivalent; Pedagogies 22.5 credits or equivalent; Nursing 75 credits or equivalent

Knowledge and understanding

After completed course the student will have the ability to

...describe:

• commonly occurring pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment methods within psychiatric care
• cultural, gender-, sex- and equality aspects of mental disease
• legislation within psychiatric modes of care and related health care situations

...account for and concretise:

• specific nursing and rehabilitation/habilitation as regards mental disease and mental disabilities
• mental symptoms and disturbances in all age groups

Skills and abilities

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

• identify commonly occurring psychiatric diseases, assess the patient's need of care, initiate and carry out and evaluate adequate nursing actions
• inform and teach patients/ friends and relatives about nursing, treatment and self-treatment
• critically review scientific literature related to psychiatric care

Judgement and approach

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

• reflect over health care situations from legislation and ethical aspects within psychiatric care
• reflect over and evaluate adequate nursing actions from cultural and psychosocial factors and gender and gender aspects
• show a professional attitude on the basis of the needs and situation in which the patient and their friends and families find themselves
• reflect critically over, and evaluate, their own knowledge, learning needs, and ability to participate actively in care and supervision

Content

CARING SCIENCES WITH FOCUS ON NURSING

The course consists of theoretical studies and clinical placement

• the nursing process application in psychiatric care according to best available evidence
• ethical aspects in connection with mental disease and psychiatric care
• legislation relevant within psychiatric care
• training in to assess the need of patient of care and initiate, carry out and evaluate adequate nursing actions
• training in to give information and teach patient/close in nursing, treatment and self-treatment
• training to compile best scientific evidence for psychiatric nursing

Instruction

The student should seek and apply evidence-based knowledge, and in applying nursing - and treatment measures follow current laws, ordinances and regulations.

ASSIGNMENT

Clinic al placement with organised supervision by registered nurse in psychiatric care in collaboration with clinical lecturer.

Assessment

During clinical placement, examinations of clinical/practical skills and specific theoretical study assignments and of professional attitude, treatment and co-operation ability are carried out.
