Entry requirements

University degree, minimum of 180 credits in medicine, nursing, nutrition or another area relevant to international health. All applicants need to verify English language proficiency. This is normally attested by means of an internationally recognised test such as TOEFL or IELTS.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course students are expected to be able to:

• Critically present and discuss current global health problems with special emphasis on low- and middle-income countries.
• Outline research priorities for improved global health, with emphasis on needs in low- and middle-income countries.
• Map methodological challenges in global health research in low-income settings.
• Critically read, analyse, synthesise, present and discuss literature addressing global health problems in low-income countries.

Content

The course presents current problems and research projects in global health. Special focus is on sexual and reproductive health and rights, child health, nutrition, humanitarian action, and issues related to the function of the health system with a special emphasis on low- and middle-income countries. Examples are taken from ongoing research of the department. Emphasis is given to a critical discussion on methods employed for research on global health issues.

Instruction

The course consists of a series of weekly seminars, where different topics in global health are presented and discussed. Students are encouraged to actively participate in the discussions and to draw on their own experiences and exposures to issues related to global health.One part of the course is to judge a manuscript on a research study similar to that of a referee in a peer review journal.

Assessment

Compulsory participation in a predetermined number of seminars. Different components are included in the examination of the course:

• written report on one or more topics from the seminar series
• seminar presentation of the report
• a referee comment document on a research study manuscript

All examinations are in English.
