Entry requirements
25 points in Mathematics, and 25 points in Physics,
including Global Geophysics MN1 5 points; or
45 points in Earth Science, including Global
Geophysics MN1 5 points, and 20 points in
Mathematics and 10 points in Physics. Recommended
previous knowledge: Applied and Environmental
Geophysics MN1, 5 points, and Geophysical Data
Processing NV1, 5 points.
Aims
The course will give the student deeper
understanding of earthquake sources
and mechanisms, seismic wave propagation,
seismological instruments and
methods for data analysis and modelling, as well as
structures within the earth identified using
seismological methods.
Content
Sources of seismic waves. Seismic wave propagation.
The wave equation in different forms, and its
solution using exact and approximate (numerical)
methods such as ray tracing and tomography.
Examples of the results of the modelling of
seismological data. Body and surface waves in
heterogeneous media. Data storage and analysis.
Networks and arrays. Earthquake source
parameters. Macroseismic studies. Risk and hazard.
Seismotectonics. Earthquake statistics.
