The course is an independent course. The course can be counted to the minor field Hebrew in a Bachelor' s degree.

Learning outcomes

The course aim is to give the student extended ability to read, understand and linguistically analyse biblical and post-biblical Hebrew text in view of increased knowledge of the area as well as basic ability to use the functional grammar concept on a Hebrew text material.

On completion of the course, the student should be able to

With respect to module 1: Biblical Hebrew prose and poetry (15 hp)

- with linguistic terminology account for basic morphology and sentence syntax with various types of subordinate clauses;

- use a Hebrew-English etymological standard dictionary;

- without the use of dictionaries translate prepared prose texts and poetic texts.

With respect to module 2: Post-biblical Hebrew texts (7,5 hp)

- account for the difference between classical Hebrew and rabbinic Hebrew concerning morphology and syntax;

- at a general level account for the text's literary and linguistic distinctive character and their historical background;

- without aid translate and philologically analyse prepared texts.

Post-biblical Hebrew, 7.5 credits

Functional Grammar, 7.5 credits

Instruction

Instruction consists of lectures, workshops and assessment.

The student's own learning activities are crucial for completion of the course.

Assessment

The students show the results of their learning through a combination of different forms of assessment, which can be either oral or written. They can take place at scheduled time and location (within the framework of regular teaching), or be of a kind that the student carries out on his/her own. Information regarding assessment will be announced at the beginning of the course.

To receive the grade Pass with distinction, Pass with distinction in at least three of the included modules is required.

Other regulations

The course may not be included in a degree if equivalent parts have been read within another course included in the degree.
