General provisions

The course intends to give the students basic knowledge concerning leadership, of significance for the ability to function professionally in daily medical work. The course is based on one week of scheduled teaching, which is followed by a written home assignment, during semester five.

Entry requirements

For admission to a new term, passed compulsory parts are required from previous terms and all examinations, except one from the nearest previous term, must be passed. After interruption of studies, it is required that all courses from the previous terms are passed. The education follows a course of studies, which implies that the courses should be read in an established order.

Learning outcomes

The student should after the course:

Knowledge

  • have knowledge about and be able to identify group psychological phenomena
  • have knowledge about and be able to identify functional leadership behaviour
  • have knowledge of basic models for communication based on group- and leadership perspectives
  • have knowledge of models for feedback
  • have knowledge about and be able to identify destructive communication techniques and be able to give examples of how these can be handled
  • have knowledge of models for behavioural change

Skills

  • be able to apply a functional view in analyses of the students’ own behaviours
  • be able to apply psychologically based methods for behavioural change
  • be able to apply psychologically based methods for feedback
  • be able to apply psychologically based methods to lead groups

Content

During the course, the students are introduced to basic theories and practical models of significance for the ability to function professionally as physicians in daily medical work.

Instruction

The course is based on theoretically based sessions and practical exercises , and is followed by a written examination and a written home assignment

Assessment

The requirements for a Pass grade are: attendance during all compulsory teaching sessions, passed written examination and passed home assignment.

All teaching is compulsory. If a compulsory teaching session is missed, the student is required to participate in an equivalent teaching session when the course is given during the next semester/semesters

Students who have failed an examination have the right to write the exam again, for up to four times (in total five examinations). If special circumstances apply can, the programme committee may allow participation in an additional exam. Each time the student participates in an exam counts as one exam. Submission of so-called blank exam papers is counted as an exam. The student has the right to request a change of examiner after two failed examinations.
