General provisions

The course is given as an elective module within Arabic C and on the third or fifth semester on the Oriental Studies Programme, and as an independent course. The course can be included in the sub area Arabic in a Bachelor’s degree.

Entry requirements

Arabic B or at least 60 credits in the Bachelor Programme in Oriental Studies with Arabic specialisation

Learning outcomes

The course intends to give a general knowledge of Arabic diglossia and the spread of the Arabic dialects and certain specialisation in a specific Arabic dialect.

Upon completing the module, the student should be able to:

- account for the concept of Arabic diglossia and its consequences in the modern Arabic world;

- account for distinctive features and spread of the modern spoken dialects;

- describe the distinctive grammatical features of a specific Arabic dialect primarily the Damascus- or the Cairo dialect;

- on an elementary level conduct a conversation in the chosen dialect and understand simple conversations.

Content

The course includes an overview of the modern Arabic dialects, their spread, features and scientific study. Further, practical and theoretical studies of a specific Arabic dialect are included.

Instruction

Seminars, group assignments, exercises and examination parts.

Assessment

Examination takes place through a written exam, as well as a listening exam and oral exam in the selected dialect.

Other regulations

The course may not be included in a degree if equivalent parts have been studied within another course included in the degree.
