Admitted to the master's programme in clinical pharmacy.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course students will be able to:

- Describe the underlying pathophysiology and complications of the therapeutic areas covered in the course.

- Explain the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties, mechanisms of action and strategies for drug monitoring of the drugs included in the course, discuss the differences between the various drugs regarding these issues and explain and evaluate interactions.

- Select a dosing and monitoring strategy for special patient groups and individual patients by performing pharmacokinetic and farmakodynamic calculations.

- Explain and discuss current evidence and treatment recommendations for the therapeutic areas covered in the course.

- Explain and discuss drug-related problems associated with the therapeutic areas and drugs included in the course.

- Select drug and dosing strategy to an individual patient as well as motivate and justify this on the basis of EBM, drug properties and and by the patient's conditions .

- Establish treatment goals, plan for initiation and withdrawal of drugs, monitoring and follow-up in an individual patient and motivate based on EBM, drug properties and the patient's condition.

- Perform a medication rewiev in an individual patient by identifying and evaluating drug -related problems, set treatment goals and select and justify actions to solve the problems.

Content

The course includes disease areas according to current course description and treatment strategies and pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles necessary for monitoring and optimisation of the pharmacotherapy for the individual patient. The student works with and discusses real and complex patient cases with a focus on treatment options, drug-related problems and interventions for these.

Instruction

The teaching is given as lectures, workshops, written and oral presentations and seminars. Certain parts of the teaching are web-based. Some parts may be given in English. Compulsory parts of the course: Course introduction, workshops, seminars, written and oral presentations of assignments.

Assessment

For a passing grade the student must pass the written examination (6 hp), a written PK patient case (1 hp) and all portions of the course that are obligatory (8 hp). Obligatory portions of the course may be completed or re-taken when the same course is offered, if, and only if, the course is not full. Students who have failed the first examination are allowed five re-examinations.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
