Entry requirements

Followed all earlier courses within the Master's programme in clinical pharmacy. Passed on thitherto implemented compulsory parts within the courses Evidence-based clinical pharmacy methods, Applied therapeutics, pharmacokinetics and disease states.

Learning outcomes

After examination, the student should be able to:

- Apply appropriate methods and tools to practise clinical pharmacy and work professionally, independently, reflective and consultative with pharmaceutical care in the patient care team.

- Work systematically to identify, solve and prevent drug-related problems (DRP) in individual patients and in the health care setting.

- Communicate with patients and prescribers in an empathic and efficient way and adapt the information to given circumstances.

- Identify patient specific drug-related problems from relevant sources, suggest interventions and treatment aims and argue for these based on evidence-based medicine, drug properties and patient related factors.

- Discuss treatment within a specific diagnostic area based on evidence based medicine (EBM), drug properties and sustainability aspects and apply to a specific patient.

- Describe a specialised medical field and discuss central DRPs from a evidence-based perspective and from a patient perspective.

- Formulate and present a clinical pharmaceutical service, discuss the feasibility, discuss the service from an evidence-based perspective and argue for its use.

- Produce oral and written reports with correct language which clearly summarise relevant contents.

Content

Supervised work experience periods is carried out on an in patient ward and if possible within out-patient care and in a nursing facility. Two work experience are included in the course. During the first period, the student performs drug reviews on in-house patients and documents patient cases continuously. Identified drug-related problems are discussed with the supervisor whereupon the student suggests possible interventions. A number of cases are presented in written form. The secornd work experience period is a specialisation and experiences are presented orally. The course also includes service development within clinical pharmacy.

Instruction

Teaching is given in the form of lectures, oral and written presentations, group discussions, workshops, seminars, supervised work experience on ward and individual studies of literature. Some parts may be given in English. The work experience can be located to different parts of the country.

Compulsory parts of the course: Course introduction, work experience, written and oral presentations, group discussions, workshops and seminars.

Assessment

For a passing grade the student must pass the clinical experience (7 hp), written patient case (3 hp), written service development report (1,5 hp), oral clinical examination OSCE (2 hp) and all other portions of the course that are obligatory (4,5 hp). Obligatory portions of the course may be completed or re-taken when the same course is offered again if, and only if, the course is not full. Students who have failed the first examination are allowed five re-examinations.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.

Other regulations

In order to start the work experience (VFU), the sudent should have passed all earlier obligatory course components within the within the courses 3FB505 and 3FB506. During VFU, working hours other than Monday to Friday at 08:00 to 17:00 may occur. During VFU, basic hygiene routines should be applied, for example concerning short-sleeves, jewelry and artificial nails. The examiner may in special cases interrupt the current VFU. For a passing grade, the student must attend all the VFU days of the course and pass all other requirements.

This course replaces and corresponds to sub-courses Clinical attachment and Service development within the course 3FB005 Master programme with breadth in clinical pharmacy.
