General provisions

The course is part of the Euroculture Master's programme.

Entry requirements

The course is only available to students within the Euroculture Master's programme.

Learning outcomes

After completion of the course students will be able to:

  • write a Master's thesis on research questions initiated by the student that examines empirical material and includes a theoretical framework, analysis and conclusions at an advanced level;
  • develop a qualified analysis of a problem of relevance for Euroculture from a multidisciplinary perspective, while engaging to an appropriate degree with the existing scholarly literature on the topic;
  • evaluate research material connected to the problems discussed in the thesis in a manner disciplinarily appropriate to the materials in question;
  • elaborate innovative solutions to the problems discussed in the thesis;
  • evaluate and critique other Master's theses from an advanced interdisciplinary position;
  • plan, design and manage complicated medium-term (research) projects in a transnational and multicultural environment successfully.

Content

Students will develop the topic of the thesis in consultation with a thesis supervisor during the third semester and will submit a thesis portfolio towards the end of that semester (Thesis, Stage 1). The main work of writing the thesis (Thesis, Stage 2) will be conducted during the fourth semester in consultation with two supervisors, one at Uppsala and one at another Euroculture consortium university. A supervisor at Uppsala University will be assigned to each student by the Programme Director. Students must submit the thesis according to the standards and deadlines established by the two relevant universities; if the deadlines differ, the later of the two is generally acceptable.

Instruction

The language of instruction is English. Individual tuition and group presentations are conducted during the writing process.

Assessment

Thesis, Stage 1 is worth 5 credits and will be graded Godkänd (Pass) or Underkänd (Fail). Thesis, Stage 2 is worth 25 credits and will be graded Väl godkänd (Pass with distinction), Godkänd (Pass), or Underkänd (Fail). The overall course (30 credits) will also be graded with the grades Väl godkänd (Pass with distinction), Godkänd (Pass), or Underkänd (Fail).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University’s disability coordinator.

Other regulations

Students must write the thesis in English.

Students may not proceed to Thesis, Stage 2 until they have passed Thesis, Stage 1.

Transitional provisions

Students retain the right to be examined on the course according to this syllabus for 3 semesters after their course instance has ended. Normally, instruction will be given according to the latest version of the course syllabus only
