Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- outline the development of calculus before Newton and Leibniz:
- outline Newton's theory of fluxions and Leibniz's differential calculus with applications;
- describe some aspects of the later development of calculus;
- give an independent analysis of original papers related to the issues mentioned above;
- give an overview of the development of mathematics during the 18th and 19th centuries;
- give a detailed account of some specific area of mathematics.
Content
Tangent and area computations in a historical perspective. Theory of fluxions. Differential calculus. Integral calculus. Important characters. History of of 18th an19th century Mathematics.
Instruction
Lectures and problem solving sessions.
Assessment
Written examination at the end of the course combined with assignments given during the course.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
