Entry requirements
120 credits including 30 ECTS credits of mathematics and 60 ECTS credits of physics.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- understand the origin and evolution of magnetic fields in solids and plasmas
- discuss how magnetic fields form structures in matter
- explain different dynamical effects that occur when magnetic fields interact with matter
- give accounts of methods and techniques used for studying magnetic fields under different conditions
- present knowledge in the area in an understandable and correct way in written form
Content
Magnetic fields in solid material and their action on atomic scales, magnetic fields in the Earth's interior, dynamos, structures and dynamics in the terrestrial magnetosphere, the solar magnetic activity, magnetic stars, interstellar and intergalactic magnetic fields, magnetic fields in cosmology.
Instruction
Lectures and seminars.
Assessment
Active participation in lectures and seminars, writing a short essay and correcting it.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
