Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Describe the atmosphere's stucture, how heat is transported in the atmosphere, frontal systems, and atmospheric systems at different scales
  • Describe cloud and precipitation formation, the origin of weather and climate, the earth's climate, and climate variations
  • Explain how important meteorological variables (temperature, air pressure, air humidity) vary in time and space
  • Describe the different components of the hydrological cycle, and be able to calculate water flows in the hydrogical cycle based on given data
  • Describe how water moves in a catchment area, both as runoff and groundwater flow
  • Describe the significance of differences in temperature, salinity and density in the oceans on the movement of water in the oceans and on global climate

Content

The sub-course Meteorology discusses the structure of the atmosphere, the general circulation, front systems, clouda and the development och weather and klimate, the earths climate (Köppen) and climate change. The sub-course Water discusses the global hydrological cycle, water balances over catchment areas and lakes, evaporation, precipitation, runoff, soil water and groundwater, water discharge measurements, water mixing in lakes. Oceanography is discussed in terms of ocean water properties, ocean currents, and the effect of these currents on global climate.

Assessment

Written examination. Written examiantion corresponds to 7 credits and compulsory part to 3 credits.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
