Learning outcomes

The purpose of the course is to provide a first overview of the status of Karaim in the Turkic language family, the phonology, grammar, morphology, and syntax of Karaim, as well as certain elementary language skills and reading skills in different writing systems for Karaim.

Upon completing the course students, for the grade of Pass, shall at least be able to:

• give an account of the status of Karaim in the Turkic language family,
• describe the main features of the phonology and grammar of Karaim,
• use different writing systems for Karaim,
• describe the morphophonological rules of Karaim,
• construct conjugated forms of nouns, pronouns, adjectives, and verbs in Karaim,
• use selected basic grammatical structures in Karaim,
• read aloud certain elementary texts in Karaim with comprehensible pronunciation,
• translate simple texts in Karaim, and
• identify word classes and analyse word forms in some selected elementary texts in Karaim.

Content

The course provides an introduction to the most important of the different writing systems, phonology, and grammar of Karaim as well as certain skills in using this knowledge. The course provides a first overview of the status of Karaim in the Turkic language family.

Instruction

Instruction comprises lectures, exercises, and examinations. The student's own learning activities are of crucial importance for work in the course.

Assessment

Students demonstrate the results of their learning through a combination of examination components. These components may be oral or written. They may take place during scheduled sessions (e.g. as part of regular instruction) or by special appointment with the teacher. Rules about this will be stated at the start of the course.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
