The course is a freestanding course.

Entry requirements

Fulfilment of the requirements for a Bachelor's degree with Semitic Languages as the main field of study including 82.5 credits in Arabic.

Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to deepen and broaden the ability to analyse modern Arabic fiction using literary-critical theories.

On completion of the course, to earn the grade pass, students should at least be able to:

discuss a selection of Arabic fictional texts from a literary-critical perspective, using terminology relevant to the texts,

produce a scientifically relevant description of the stylistic and genre-related special characteristics of these texts,

carry out a literary analysis of selected literature based on modern literary-critical methods,

discuss the selected literature within the framework of its historical, societal and literary-historical contexts,

discuss gender-related aspects of the selected literature.

Content

Reading of about 250 normal pages of modern literary texts in the main language. In addition, the course includes reading relevant theory texts. Appropriate texts can e.g. be taken from the literature list and substitutions may occur.

Instruction

The teaching consists of teaching sessions and supervision.

Assessment

Assessment seminars. A written assignment in the form of a minor essay is submitted on a text study assignment equivalent to the number of pages not read in the classroom, up to a total of 250 pages. For assessment seminars, participants are required to prepare study assignments (texts) for correct grammatical reading in Arabic, translation and discussion of contents. In addition, independent reading is carried out of one or more original literary works in Arabic and relevant theoretical literature for production of the minor essay. To receive a final grade for the course, a minor essay of about 15 pages is to be produced.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may decide to make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. Special circumstances can include notification of special educational support from the University's disability coordinator.

Other regulations

The course may not be included in a degree if equivalent components have been studied in another course included in the degree.
